Coisas que Aprendi com os Filmes / Things I Learned from the Movies

I was a movie addict all of my life, but what I didn't know is that the same way I learned a lot from the movies I've watched throughout my life, many of the things I've learned in movies were lies.

When I was a kid I remember seeing some American film in which gangs (I cannot remember the movie name anymore and what those gangs were) attacking the New York subway. The result was that on a trip I made with my parents to Sao Paulo, when I had my first opportunity to ride the subway in my life, I refused to go with my father for fear of gangs who attacked the subway. I only went on the subway for the first time more than 10 years after that. For fear... Afraid of something I saw in a movie... It was not even a real fear, just a fear created by my imagination.

I learned to speak English with the movies... Seeing a thousand times the same film and decorating the speeches, I ended up familiarizing myself with the language, and so, along with the songs I translated, I ended up fluent in that language.

But one thing that annoys me deeply and that I learned from the movies, was to unleash my imagination. That piss me off, because for all I see, I create a incredibla plot. I observe the people around me and create characters for them, based on the few information I have had for observation. What do you mean? I will give you an example.

I recently took a flight to Amsterdan and on my side sat a guy (30 something years). He was blond, with the beard growing, with his hair starting to become scarce in his head and tried to chat a few times. I followed my procedure of being sympathetic but not accessible, because the worst thing you have on trips like this is to sit next to someone who speaks the whole flight, so I never encourage conversations on airplanes.

At one point, this guy picked up a tube of something in his luggage, passed his content on his two little fingers and rubbed them one in each nostril.

So far, OK... I thought it might be some kind of a nose product, some anti-allergy, I do not know! Then he repeated the procedure again in one of the nostrils and soon after, he passed the same little finger on his teeth.

The first thing that came into my head was:  "That was disgusting "! The second thing that came into my head was:  "The guy is using cocaine!"

Why people? Why did I think that? I will tell you why: Guilt of the movies! The only place I saw anyone wear something in their nostrils and teeth was in movies (my friends and the people I walk with don't do that kind of thing so I've never seen anyone do it in real life) this thing was cocaine!

From that, to me get worried with the guy was one second of time. I started imagining him trying to put something in my luggage, in my pocket while I slept and thought about how much he should be a dick to use these things in front of me, without even disguising (because in movies people always use it in the bathroom of the Plane).

But he was so quiet, so calm, so much more relaxed than me, that I started to feel a crazy bitch! I remembered the subway episode from when I was a kid and I started to wonder if again I was not fantasizing about fiction-based stuff. I took about 4 glasses of wine (no matter what is the question, alcohol is always the answer), and I began to rationally analyze the behavior versus attitudes of the guy and then I started to relax!
It's a lot easier to think that I'm crazy, not the world! Even because, let’s face it, people who believe everything they see in movies/television, aren't very normal people, are they?

Wait! / Espere!

E ele falou : “MER... MER... not woman (mulher).”

✋✋✋✋✋✋✋✋✋✋
The ship where I work was going to start a project in the Russian sea, and for this, all the crew members had to take a Russian work visa.

I sent my passport to my company and a few weeks later I received the same at home with a visa... All written in Russian, so obviously, I didn't understand a word of what was written on it.

The day came to go to work and I would have to stop in Moscow to catch another plane to Anapa, which was the place where my ship was.
Arriving in Moscow, we were trapped a while inside the plane because of a strong blizzard on the outside (because we stopped away from the terminal and we would have to take one of those transport buses). For me it was a mixture of joy and concern, for I had a short time to take the next plane, which made me worried, and cheerful because I had never seen snow before.

When we finally got into the airport, I only had more or less 40 minutes to go through immigration and find the gate where I would leave on my next flight, which, depending on the size of the airport, is very little time!

I got in line with immigration and when it came to my turn I handed my passport to the agent who made a strange face and stood repeatedly looking at my visa and then to my face. I realized there was something wrong, but I kept my "I'm a nice person" smile waiting for him to tell me something. He then took the phone and called someone and after exchanged a few words in Russian with the person on the other side of the line, he looked at me and spoke in English: "Wait!" . I nodding my head a positive sign and stood there waiting, my smile going away slowly along with my remaining time to catch the next flight.

After being totally ignored for 20 minutes, even looking at the agent in time intervals to see if he remembered me, I reheared saying something to him, that before even letting me open my mouth, shouted another: "Wait!" , from inside his cabin. I nodding once more saying yes and I spoke in English: "I wait, but I'm worried because I have another flight that is opening the boarding right now." "Can you at least explain to me what I'm waiting for?"
Then he showed my visa pointing to a specific field, which I naturally did not understand what was written because it was in Russian, and told me: "You here (pointing to the field), MER... MER."
I replied: "Okay, but what does MER mean?"
And he said, "MER... Mer... Not woman. "
And I said, "Are you telling me that in my visa it is written that I am a man and not a woman?"

He nodded with his head and shouted another "Wait" full of reason.
And I waited... Thinking "I´m fucked," but I waited... I waited to be arrested, to be interrogated, or even to be sent on some flight back home, because Russia is a Country that does not have much acceptance to homosexuals, according to the reports I used to read, and they should be thinking that I was some trans or something. But I thought, okay... The worst is going to have to go home and how bad can it be?

But after another 10 minutes the agent looked at me, handed over my passport and sent me into the Moscow airport.
I was surprised to have the entrance allowed, but then I looked at the clock and I spoke again: "I´m fucked"... My next flight was already closing the boarding.

And there I was like crazy running around Moscow airport to see if I could still catch my flight.

Ler ou não ler, eis a questão / To read, or not to read, that is the question

❤❤❤❤❤

With my wanderings on Instagram and my posts on the books I read I have just discovered a giant world of book readers and profiles devoted entirely to the disclosure, comments and literary preferences of the owners of these profiles. Some of them even have partnerships with some publishers and receive free books for their evaluation, and of course, advertisement of the books received.

I found this so fantastic, and I kept wondering why I never had this idea! I, who am a bookworm, have no place at home to keep them, that I always have a book as a companion and that I take it with me everywhere I go.

The truth is, I really had no idea there were as many fanatical readers as I am. But they exist! And there are everywhere! They exist on Instagram, they mark your presence on Facebook and Youtube and when you find one, you find all! Videos and videos about comments related to books and reviews and impressions and synopses ... anyway ... I've discovered that we are many!

When I went to the Rio Biennial earlier this month, I was very annoyed that the event was so crowded, that it seemed to me at first people who did not like to read, nor were they buying books and who were there just to say that they were there and take photos and post on their social networks. But in a post-event self-assessment I understood that:
1) I really hate crowded places and that my judgment can be seriously compromised due to my discomfort by stocking.
2) Even though not all people were there with shopping bags, all of the ones I noticed were extremely excited about the event and the experience of that event, which may mean they just did not have much money to shop! and
3) I should be happy to see so many people interested in reading and the universe of books!

If the evil of the world is ignorance, the fact that so many people are interested should be a cause for celebration because somehow, even if limited, the world of these people is being expanded and new possibilities can arise in front of them. If all people enjoyed reading and acquiring information as they like to acquire objects or followers , it would be much harder for people to be deceived by "leaders" who use their lack of knowledge for his own benefit.

Once, a person I like very much, came to show me a video of a blind preacher, who "supposedly" received messages from God and because of these messages he knew "a lot" of various "scientific" subjects. She was very excited to tell me about the video and how the preacher was wise and that if it was not God he would not know all that stuff. So I watched the video and saw that he was not wise, that the knowledge he claimed to have received from God was no big deal to anyone who has made a decent Second Degree, and yet he spoke so many things wrong that I could only find it revolting. My revolt was to think how all those people who were watching and cheering were being deceived by a person who claimed to know more than they. And everything he said was so basic, so obvious to me, that I did not understand how people could be believing it. But then I realized that not all people had the study I had. Not all read and not all can read, and it is on top of these people that it is easier to throw the lies and make them true. After all, why would not they believe a preacher, who claims to have received messages from God on matters of science, if they have no way of knowing that all this information is also given in schools?

But why not everyone who can, likes to read? Would reading be a matter of habit? Is love of books an example? Was it just bad luck for not having read any book that sparked her passion for books? Difficult to know, but what I know is about all the benefits that reading brings to people's lives! Benefits such as increased vocabulary and ease of expression, increased creativity and relaxation provided by reading, access to various information and various locations that might not physically be possible, increased ability to empathize because of involvement with different characters in the books ... anyway. I could stand for pages and pages citing the benefits of reading, but I find it more important to simply say that reading is good! Reading is good for the soul, it makes your day look different, it makes you stay in a different place whenever you want, it makes the world more accessible and it connects you more to the world.

It is good to know that we readers are many, and growing. It's good to see a Bienal full of excited teenagers and children and enjoying being there. This brings me the hope of a better future, more aware of the lies of others, more difficult to be deceived and tricked. And despite all my disbelief in humanity, experiencing this kind of thing makes me believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Não ouçam a música do elefante! / Do not hear the Elephant song !

Eu cantarolava, e murmurava, e assobiava a musica.

Ela e o Gus me olharam com caras bem preocupadas e ela falou: Po Quel !

🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉

Do you guys ever needed to ask yourself, how often it's normal to hear the same music before you start thinking you have some serious mental problem? I had to seriously ask myself that this weekend!

It all started when we went on a trip to Volta Redonda, me, Carol and Gu. Gu asked Carol for the song of the guy who had a sandwich name. I laughed and stayed quiet. But then the music started. I really can't explain what effect that song had on me, but I got kind of ecstatic listening to it. I asked what song was that and Carol told me it was from a guy named Beirut and that the name of the music was "Elephant Gun".

We arrived at Volta Redonda, and after we got out of the car, it looked like there was a loud speaker in my head who kept repeating that song all day. I humed it, and sang it, and whistled the music. As soon as we got back in the car to go someplace else, I asked Carol for the Elephant song.

And so it was all weekend. If we would drive to the pharmacy, or the bakery, or to some aunt's house, or to my mother's... Anyway, every time we entered the car I asked: -Carol, put the elephant's music on!
Once I had access to the first computer with Internet, I went to search the lyrics of the song and watch the music video. It was an overdose of the "Elephant Gun"!

I wondered why the name of the song was that, and found that in fact Elephant Gun is the nickname of a hunting weapon (577 T-Rex Riflle shot A.K. a elephant gun). I read the lyrics again to try to better understand the meaning of this and what it had to do with elephants. And in the letter I found no other mention of elephants except the name of the weapon. So the music spoke clearly about a hunt, but not specifically an elephant hunt! Then I went to see the music video and I got confused even more. I did not understand whether  "Such a hunt" is women, or women representing elephants or elephants disguised as women! More confused than never I wrote messages for Gu and Carol(that by that time they must be sleeping because it was 3 a.m. and I was awake trying to understand the lyrics of a song), explaining my findings on the subject and asking their opinion. All of this, of course, listening to the music!
When the weekend ended and we got in the car to get back to Rio,I asked Carol again for the Elephant song!
She and Gus looked at me with some pretty worried faces and she said, "C´mom Quel! That's enough, right? I think you've heard enough of this song!"
I felt a gigantic shame and wondered if I wouldn't be obsessed with music, but I confess I was sadder to not hear the music than I was worried that they would think I was crazy!
When I got home, I turned on the computer and continued with my conspiracy theories about the elephants. And you win a candy if you guess exactly what I'm listening to right now!

I've lost the count of how many times I've heard the elephant song these days. But instead of thinking that I have some serious psychological disturbance, I prefer to think that in this music there is some subliminary message hidden. Like the one from the "buy Batom" (a brazilian chocolate)we had on TV. You couldn't get out of home and not to buy the chocolate! So this song must have something hidden like, "Listen to Me again" and again and again...

So guys, seriously, don't listen to the elephant music! And if you can´t handle your Curiosity (morbid) and listen to it, then don't blame me!

And if you listen and don't have the slightest desire to listen to it again, please don't let me know that I really have a serious mental problem!
