O Olho de Horus / The Eye of Horus

O Olho de Hórus ou 'Udyat' é um símbolo, proveniente do Egito Antigo, que significa proteção e poder, relacionado à divindade Hórus. Era um dos mais poderosos e mais usados amuletos no Egito em todas as épocas.

Segundo uma lenda, o olho esquerdo de Hórus simbolizava a Lua e o direito, o Sol. Durante a luta, o deus Set arrancou o olho esquerdo de Hórus, o qual foi substituído por este amuleto, que não lhe dava visão total, colocando então também uma serpente sobre sua cabeça. Depois da sua recuperação, Horus pôde organizar novos combates que o levaram à vitória decisiva sobre Set. Era a união do olho humano com a vista do falcão, animal associado ao deus Hórus. Era usado, em vida, para afugentar o mau-olhado e, após a morte, contra o infortúnio do Além.

Os antigos acreditavam que este símbolo de indestrutibilidade poderia auxiliar no renascimento, em virtude de suas crenças sobre a alma. Este símbolo aparece no reverso do Grande selo dos Estados Unidos da América,sendo também um símbolo frequentemente usado e relacionado a Maçonaria.

O Olho Esquerdo de Hórus representa a informação estética abstrata, controlada pelo hemisfério direito do cérebro. Lida com pensamentos e sentimentos e é responsável pela intuição. Ele aborda o universo de um modo feminino.

Hoje em dia, o Olho de Horus adquiriu também outro significado e é usado para evitar o mal e espantar inveja (mau-olhado), mas continua com a idéia de trazer proteção, vigor e saúde.

According to a legend, Horus ' left eye symbolized the moon and the right, the sun. During a struggle, the Set God ripped out Horus ' left eye, which was replaced by this amulet, which gave him no full vision, and then also put a serpent over his head. After his recovery, Horus was able to organise new fights that led him to the decisive victory over Set. It was the union of the human eye with the view of the Falcon, animal associated with the god Horus. It was used, in life, to frighten away the evil eye and, after death, against the misfortune of the afterlife.

The ancients believed that this symbol of indestructibility could help in rebirth, by virtue of their beliefs about the soul. This symbol appears on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States of America, being also a symbol often used and related to Freemasonry.

The left eye of Horus represents abstract aesthetic information, controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain. It deals with thoughts and feelings and is responsible for intuition. He approaches the universe in a feminine way.

Nowadays, the eye of Horus has also acquired another meaning and is used to avoid evil and amaze envy (evil eye), but continues with the idea of bringing protection, vigor and health.
